Further studies will reveal whether inhalation of endogenous NO also has antimicrobial effects, upregulates ciliary motility, and inhibits platelet aggregation. This new physiological principle of NO as an airborne mediator may extend beyond vasodilation. Since NO is produced above the bifurcation of the large airways this vasodilating gas will only affect pulmonary vessels in contact with ventilated alveoli, thereby improving ventilation/perfusion matching. It is tempting to speculate that the production of NO in the paranasal sinuses has the purpose of modulating lung function in humans. "These results show that NO derived from the upper airways is capable of improving oxygen uptake and reducing pulmonary vascular resistance (fig3). Nasally-inspirated air is filtered for foreign bodies and particles, humidified and warmed in a way that suits the lungs via the nasal turbinates, and avoids dental issues caused by mouth breathing.įurthermore, nitric oxide is released in the nasal passages. It's not up for debate that breathing through the nose is optimal, and taping is an easy way to ensure that for those 8 hours at least I don't have to think about it. I've no doubt that if I needed to gasp for breath reflexively for any reason whilst asleep, I'd have no trouble and would simply wake up later with the tape no longer across my lips. It just stops your mouth from falling open when your jaw is slack. The tape is not so strong that it's impossible to open the mouth, for example when I wake up I will usually open my mouth and this isn't prevented by the tape. Obviously not if I'm experiencing any congestion or have taken alcohol, but generally I sleep on my back and wake up with a dry mouth and sore throat. There’s some studies out there that explain the reason behind that, but I can’t recall why offhand. ![]() The greatest benefit related to sleep has been not needing to pee as much during the night. Then the body will naturally nasal breath as it’s habit.įor me the switch to almost 100% nasal breathing has been great, even for my physical activities. It should only take a number of nights or weeks to do. It’s about training yourself to do it without thinking. The tape is affixed just enough to coach the lips shut but not to forcefully close them and it shouldn’t change what the mouth and jaw would naturally do if acid reflux or vomiting occurs. It’s meant to be used as a temporary resource to train the body to nasal breath over a short term period. Weeks at the most.Īn important aspect of mouth taping that you seem to overlook is that the tape shouldn’t be so tight and strong that it wouldn’t fall off with relative ease. ![]() It doesn’t take long to open the pathways up. The less you breath through your nose the worse it will be. ![]() But the more you nasal breath the less obstructed your nasal pathways will be. On your second bullet, well sure, you wouldn’t want to try to only nasal breath if you have nasal congestion or irritation.
